Globalink Research Intern developing software to improve communication for individuals with speech disorders
Alongside Dr. Frank Rudzicz of University of Toronto’s Department of Computer Science, Soumendu is constructing software that will improve the quality of life of individuals with speech disorders.
Using electroencephalography (EEG) signals from patients, Soumendu is collecting data from linguistic centers of the brain and areas involved in motor planning. This data will contribute to the development of tools that will allow patients to communicate via EEG signals by the use of an artificial articulator.
“Mitacs has provided me with an invaluable experience to participate in research in my field of interest, while simultaneously helping those who struggle with communication.” Although Soumendu applied to other research programs, Mitacs Globalink was his first choice. “Canada is a beautiful country with nice, polite people. Given the country’s acclaimed academic institutions, it’s the ideal place to study and participate in research.”
Soumendu looks forward to his future, “My dream is to pursue my PhD and embark on a career in Signal Processing and Machine Learning research in Canada. Mitacs Globalink is providing me with the insight and exposure I need to take the next steps.”
Mitacs thanks the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario for their support of the Globalink research internship in this story. Across Canada, the Globalink program also receives support from Alberta Innovates, the Government of British Columbia, the Government of New Brunswick, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Government of Nova Scotia, the Government of Prince Edward Island, the Government of Quebec, the Government of Saskatchewanand Research Manitoba.
