Recipient of the Mitacs Undergraduate Award for Outstanding Research Achievement
The research resulted in the creation of a strain of E-coli that can utilize sugars simultaneously to efficiently produce Biofuel. Below is an exclusive interview with Mr. Goel, who won the Mitacs Undergraduate Award for Outstanding Research Achievement, as presented by the Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway at the 2nd Annual Mitacs Awards Reception, held November 28th in Ottawa.
What is the greatest advantage you gained by participating in Mitacs Globalink?
The greatest advantage I feel I have gained by being part of Mitacs Globalink is the opportunity to work with students from all over the world. To have this global exposure and exchange of ideas, which have enriched my personality and intellect, has left an indelible impression on me. Globalink gave me the opportunity to work in a world-class laboratory environment and exposed me to the most cutting-edge research and technology. Due to the international nature of the program, I was able to interact with students from many different cultures and backgrounds, which was an exciting learning experience for me.
Which skill do you think is most important for undergraduate students to learn before entering the professional research environment? And before doing research abroad?
I think one of the most important characteristics to have before entering a professional research environment is a strong sense of motivation. Being passionate about your field takes you very far. Another important thing for students to develop is a sound technical and analytical background, as you will be able to rely on it when you are faced with unforeseen challenges in your research. Finally, the ability to remain flexible and have an open mind is essential for doing research abroad, so that you can learn as much as possible from the new ideas, work culture, methodologies and ways of perceiving that you come into contact with in your new environment.
What advice would you give other undergraduate students currently considering Mitacs Globalink?
Mitacs Globalink provides a golden opportunity for innovative research, global exposure and a chance to work in Canada’s world-class facilities. I would ask they be sure to make the most of their time here, and wish them all the best for their future endeavors.
What are your future plans? Where do you see yourself in five years?
During the next five years I plan on continuing my education and field of research, hopefully with the goal of completing graduate studies at a renowned university. I hope to establish a sound career for myself in my field. But most importantly, I hope I can use my research to make a positive impact on the global community which I have come to know through Mitacs Globalink.
