Selkirk College, in southern BC, built a network of Mitacs-funded internships with nine community partners to advance social and economic wellbeing in its rural region. In areas from conservation to culture, Selkirk students undertook research to address pressing local challenges. For example, working with the Kootenay Rockies Tourism Association, one intern identified and explored the drivers and risks, models, and opportunities of cannabis tourism within the Kootenay Rockies Region.
“This project used a literature review and content analysis to develop materials for an event to gather feedback from stakeholders. It gave the student an opportunity for work-integrated learning and networking, while creating locally specific knowledge.” – Tracey Harvey, faculty researcher, Selkirk College
