Acculogic Inc. benefits from a Mitacs Enterprise intern’s specialized experience for robotics testing
Acculogic, an Ontario-based robotics testing company, saw the potential to advance its theoretical base originally through a Mitacs-Accelerate internship in collaboration with Mario Morfin, a mathematics post-doctoral fellow from York University’s School of Information Technology. When the algorithms for the new optimization process were completed, the company was faced with the challenge of continuing to build upon the advancements that Mario had developed. The company turned to Mitacs Enterprise to provide the necessary funding to be able to maintain their relationship Mario while affording him a new opportunity for professional development.
Through Mitacs Enterprise, Mario took part in a 2-day “boot camp” through Mitacs Step which taught him essential skills in project management, networking and effective communication that he says were vital to his continued success with Acculogic. Now halfway through his six-month Enterprise internship with Acculogic, Mario is helping the company to redesign part of their software to account for the theoretical foundations developed during his original Mitacs Accelerate internship. Mario values his experiences through both Mitacs Accelerate and now Enterprise, saying “The person who can translate the needs of a client into a developed product holds the key to success. This process not only involves understanding the nuts and bolts of the technology, but also those of the business environment. Mitacs programs allowed me to acquire the skills necessary for my professional development in industry to better be able to meet the needs of my industrial partners.”
Farouk Eshragi, Vice President of Manufacturing Test Systems for Acculogic, praised Mitacs Enterprise for giving them an opportunity to access vital expertise for their product. “Taking part in a Mitacs Enterprise internship was icing on the cake for us,” he said, “Through Enterprise, companies are assured that they can get assistance from the research fellows for completion and commercialization of their projects—a vitally important factor for any SME.”
Mitacs thanks the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario for their support of the Entreprise research internship in this story. Across Canada, the Entreprise program also receives support from Alberta Innovates, the Government of British Columbia, the Government of New Brunswick, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Government of Nova Scotia, the Government of Prince Edward Island, the Government of Quebec, the Government of Saskatchewan and Research Manitoba.
