Waterloo, ON — Mitacs and the Indigenous and Black Engineering and Technology (IBET) PhD Project have expanded their partnership to offer fellows special funding under the Mitacs Accelerate or Mitacs Business Strategy Internship (BSI) programs.
Through this renewed initiative, IBET PhD students will have access to up to 12 internship units while postdoctoral fellows will have access to up to nine internship units. Enterprise partners working with IBET Fellows will contribute a reduced amount of $3,750 towards the $15,000 research award.
The IBET PhD Project is intended to foster equitable and inclusive research environments in order to increase the presence of Indigenous and Black academics in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Providing a unique opportunity that caters to researchers’ needs and experiences, the initiative also aims to develop a network of support to ensure they receive the professional guidance needed to maximize their potential.
“The generous fellowship provides an outstanding opportunity to accelerate scholarship and career development for emerging IBET Fellowship recipients interested in collaborating with industry to address practical challenges in engineering and technology.”

The Indigenous and Black Engineering and Technology PhD Project (IBET) is a partnership program launched in 2021 by six powerhouse engineering and technology faculties in Ontario. The project aims to foster equitable and inclusive research and teaching environments by increasing the presence of Indigenous and Black academics in STEM disciplines across Canada. The partnership has since expanded to 18 universities across Canada.
The IBET PhD Project offers a Momentum Fellowship of $30,000 per year for four years, along with industry/academic mentorship and professional development opportunities to Indigenous and Black fellows in engineering and technology. The success of these scholars will lead to teaching and research careers in academia, industry, and policy-making.
