2021 Mitacs Awards call for nominations opens

Awards recognize the importance of research in driving Canadian innovation

Vancouver, BC — Today, Mitacs opens the call for nominations for the 11th annual Mitacs Awards. These prestigious awards honour and recognize outstanding students, fellows, and professors who have participated in Mitacs programs.

From healthcare to clean technology, the Mitacs Awards showcase advancements that benefit the lives of people across Canada. Cancer-fighting natural remedies, the discovery of new galaxies, digital tools to enhance children’s literacy, and a first-of-its-kind battery to boost the performance of electric cars are but a few of the innovations brought forward from Mitacs Award winners.  

This year’s Mitacs Awards recipients will be announced at a ceremony on November 23, 2021.  

Nominations for the 2021 awards are now open for the following categories:  

Mitacs Award for Outstanding Innovation — Indigenous*  
Given to an Indigenous student or postdoctoral fellow who has made a significant achievement in research and innovation during their Mitacs-funded project. Priority shall be given to candidates whose achievements significantly impact or support Indigenous communities and/or populations.  

Mitacs Award for Outstanding Innovation — International  
Given to a student or postdoctoral fellow who has made a significant achievement in research and innovation through international collaboration during their Mitacs-funded Globalink or Accelerate International project.  

Mitacs Award for Outstanding Innovation — Master’s  
Given to a master’s student who has made a significant achievement in research and innovation during their Mitacs-funded project.  

Mitacs Award for Outstanding Innovation — PhD  
Given to a PhD student who has made a significant achievement in research and innovation during their Mitacs-funded project.  

Mitacs Award for Outstanding Innovation — Postdoctoral*  
Given to a postdoctoral fellow who has made a significant achievement in research and innovation during their Mitacs-funded project.  

Mitacs Award for Exceptional Leadership — Professor*  
Given to an academic supervisor with an exemplary record of developing collaborations with industry and other partners, providing valuable research and training experiences to their interns and initiating research projects with significant outcomes through their Mitacs funding.  

Mitacs & NRC–IRAP Award for Commercialization*  
Given to a student or postdoctoral fellow for an idea brought from research that is now available on the market (or has strong support that it is soon to be commercialized).  

*These award categories are open to nominations for college, polytechnic, and university participants from eligible programs. 

The nomination deadline is Monday, September 27, 2021, at 12p.m. ET. To submit a nomination, please visit the nominations page. All nominations must be submitted online using the link found at the bottom of the nominations page.
