Vancouver, BC — His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, announced Mitacs Board of Directors members Nassif Ghoussoub and Meric Gertler to the Order of Canada.
Nassif Ghoussoub was awarded as an Officer of the Order of Canada for his scientific contributions to the study of differential equations, and for advancing mathematics research and education in Canada. A leading mathematics researcher, Ghoussoub co-founded Mitacs in 1999, and is the founder of the Banff International Research Station (BIRS) and the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS).
Meric Gertler was awarded as a Member of the Order of Canada for his research in urban geography, notably for his influential studies of innovation, technology, and development in cities. Gertler is internationally renowned as a distinguished scholar and is one of the world’s foremost urban theorists and policy practitioners. Gertler is the 16th president of the University of Toronto.
The Order of Canada, one of our country’s highest civilian honours, was established in 1967, during Canada’s centennial year, to recognize outstanding achievement, dedication to the community, and service to the nation.
