Ray Pan creates a home in Canada

Mitacs Globalink student develops a design system for family communication

As a Computer Science major from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Ray has always had an interest in networks and networking — both on computers, and among people. This interest has served him well as he helped to build a household notification system that helps family members to keep track of domestic chores and appointments, as well as to inform each other of personal schedules and shared commitments.

The notification system is part of a larger research project exploring computer-mediated family communication. Ray has also been able to meet with local business people during his internship, including two start-up technology companies with whom his professor is collaborating.

Overall, Ray’s close collaborations with other researchers in his lab and the experience of his internship have given him a sense of home right here in Canada. He plans to apply to the Globalink Graduate Fellowship so that he may receive funding assistance to return to SFU as soon as possible to work with Dr. Neustaedter.

“The experience has taught me so much about universities here, but also about industry and I’ve made so many friends and connections!”
