MITACS congratulates Dr. Aftab Mufti on being named to the Order of Canada, the highest honour for excellence in the country.
We are also pleased to announce that Dr. Mufti will join MITACS as the Associate Scientific Director on August 1st.
Dr. Mufti is world-renowned for his research in the use of fibre optic sensors in the construction and monitoring of bridges. His contributions to science have put Canadian research in this area on the map and have helped to bring leading edge research to industry, creating an atmosphere of enhanced innovation in the country.
In 1995, he played a pivotal role in establishing the Network of Centres of Excellence on Intelligent Sensing for Innovative Structures (ISIS Canada). The network ensures that advanced sensing tools are conceived, developed and integrated into Canadian infrastructure, contributing to safer bridges and better roads.
Currently a Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Manitoba, Dr. Mufti is also the inaugural President of the International Society for SHM of Intelligent Infrastructures (ISHMII). His contribution to the emerging areas of Civionics, SHM and finite element method (FED) over the course of his thirty year career have led to nine books and over 200 publications, numerous prestigious awards and unparalleled technological advancements.
Dr. Mufti immigrated to Canada from Pakistan in 1963.
This tribute is particularly noteworthy for Dr. Mufti as he was present in Montreal for Expo 67 where the Order of Canada was unveiled. His citation from the adjudication committee reads:
... for his contributions to and leadership in the field of civil engineering, notably for researching the use of advanced composite materials and fibre optic sensors in the construction and monitoring of bridges and other infrastructures.
We are privileged to have Dr. Mufti join MITACS and fortunate to work with him on his vision for the future of innovation in Canada. |
