Efficient design of quiet turbomachinery stages with a unique coupling method

Most current propulsion and ventilation systems still suffer from poor efficiency, noise issues and too high emission levels. Little efficiency gain could yield significant reduction of energy waste, noise pollution, gas consumption and pollutant emission. Moreover a lot of the large rotating facilities do not meet their target performances and suffer from early degradation and fatigue issues causing some significant cost increase and losses to the companies producing them.

Aerodynamic Noise of High-Lift Devices

The proposed project studies the noise sources of airplane high-lift devices (HLD) that are responsible for most of the aircraft noise at approach. The latter in turn creates noise nuisances that create health issues to populations close to large urban airports. Two approaches are followed. A state-of-the art simulation that predicts most of the turbulent structures that generate the HLD noise will be performed and will serve as a reference to the development of analytical models of the HLD noise that will be integrated in a  unique software by the partner.

Development of peptide-based PCSK9 inhibitors for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia

Hypercholesterolemia, characterized by increased plasma low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, is a major determinant of the risk of cardiovascular disease (the leading cause of global mortality). Unfortunately, the commonly known cholesterol-lowering drugs are not effective enough to obtain the recommended cholesterol levels for many people. PCSK9 plays a critical role in cholesterol metabolism, and thus its inhibition emerged as a novel therapeutic target for hypercholesterolemia.

Development and Validation of Defined Biomaterial Surfaces to Grow Stem Cells Suitable for Regenerative Medicine Year Two

The proposed research aims to develop and validate surfaces that have no components of animal origin for the growth of stem cells. Materials not of animal origin are required for the growth of stem cells if they are to be used clinically to treat disease and/or injury. Initially, surfaces already developed and designed by the fellow during his Ph.D. will undergo testing for stem cell growth. Concurrently, additional surfaces will be developed with stem cell niches identified by StemCell Surfaces.

Smarter Microelectronics Packaging for Performance Scaling

This research project will investigate materials and process behaviors in microelectronic packages that are become increasingly dense and explore novel alternatives to accommodate such densities. When more components are placed and interconnected with each other in smaller and smaller spaces, traditional materials and methods for package assembly become difficult, if not impossible, to replicate.

EMG Driven Human-Humanoid Robot Interaction

The electromyography (EMG) signals are biological signals, which are related to the electrical activity produced by skeletal muscles. To measure and analyze EMG signals, we will use noninvasive EMG surface electrodes. The EMG signals allow knowing the intention of the movement before that the movement happens; this is because of the electromechanical delay of the muscle. The proposed project would exploit this property to generate humanoid robot movements in order to interact properly with a human being.
