Effects of Mobile Technologies on Emergency Response

Workplace incidents usually need to be reported and it is important to ensure that they are resolved in a timely manner. To understand the procedures involved in an emergency response to a workplace incident, we have started investigating the existing practices of the McGill University Safety office by interviewing their personnel. We focused our investigation on chemical spills that occur in the workplace, and found potential areas of improvement in their practices. These potential areas of improvement can be addressed by mobile sensing.

Exploring the Uptake and Impact of Using the LEADS in a Caring Environment Frameworkto Enhance Leadership Capacity in Health Systems

The health system in Canada is increasingly recognized as a complex adaptive environment requiring system wide perspectives and approaches for improving outcomes. The World Health Organization has identified leadership as a key building block of systems change, yet evaluating the value of investment in leadership development is challenging. LEADS is an evidence-based leadership development framework offered through the Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL), complemented by four 360 LEADS© self-assessment tools.

Increasing and Automating Adaptivity of LogicBlox Datalog Platform

Declarative programming techniques have been used to make programming available to common users through introducing query languages such as SQL and spreadsheet programs such as Excel. The proposed industrial partner, LogicBlox, has developed software that enables highly-complex data analysis through the flexible and familiar form of spreadsheet computing. The main goal of this proposal is to increase and automate adaptivity of LogicBlox platform, and to evaluate proposed methodology through applications in local industry.

Detection and prevention of preeclampsia using metabolomics and Vaccinium leaf extract for human trophoblast survival

Blueberry leaves are gynaecological aids and inhibitors of advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs). AGEs cause atherosclerosis, kidney, vascular, and neurological diseases through an oxidative process and correlate with preeclampsia. Preeclampsia affects 2-7% of women and is a leading cause of maternal/perinatal mortality. A woman dies of preeclampsia every eight minutes worldwide. Unfortunately, randomized trials evaluating dietary, vitamin, mineral treatments showed minimal benefit in reducing preeclampsia. AGEs are associated with preeclampsia.

Regulation of T-type calcium channel activity by targeting channel trafficking – a novel approach for pain management

Current therapies to manage pain either result in side effects or are insufficient and the associated medical costs and loss of work days come pose a tremendous socioeconomic burden. We recently showed that T-type channel activity is aberrantly regulated in inflammatory and neuropathic pain by the deubiquitinase USP5, and we have begun to explore this mechanism as a new therapeutic avenue based on interfering TAT peptides. We now plan to test our TATpeptides in diabetic neuropathy and inflammatory bowel pain.

Eye to brain to choice: Neurocognitive mechanisms underlying consumer behaviour

Project Objectives

• The primary objective of this project is to construct and validate an interactive eye-tracking system that can be  deployed at kiosk based automated consumer interfaces. This system will gather real-time idiosyncratic information about attention and current mental state, and use this to target messages to the consumer.

• Secondly, we will use a combination of eye tracking and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods to develop eyegaze behavior algorithms that can be used as an index of true preference in consumers

Understanding the cognitive processes involved in faking behavior

For faking to occur, test takers must be both able and willing/motivated to provide false responses on a given test (Snell, Sydell, & Lueke, 1999). If ability is lacking, then the motivation to do so does not matter. Conversely one might be able to purposely alter their responses to elevate their scores, but may not be motivated to do so. Therefore it is important to understand both the ability (e.g., cognitive processes) and the motivation to fake in order to better understand how to prevent and detect faking behavior.

Predicting job performance through personality testing: Improving the quality of research and practice at a Human Resources Consulting Firm

The Pathfinder Career System is a sophisticated psychological assessment tool that provides a high-definition portrait of an individual’s behavioural profile that focuses on the key attributes required for success in a specific job position. The purpose of this project is for Optimum Talent inc., a Human Resources Consulting firm, to be in a position to make optimal use of the test, by determining how it can be integrated into the current services offered by the firm and by pushing the tool further to respond to very specific client demands.

Development of a gender-sensitive organizational assessment model

The objective of this assignment is to strengthen the institutional and organizational assessment (IOA) model developed by Universalia to identify gender dimensions which affect equity and performance within an organization. To do so, the intern will be asked to proceed to a mapping of existing gender equality tools (as well as their strengths and weaknesses) used in the assessment and capacity-building of international development organizations in order to further develop the IOA model.
