Where are Mitacs Training workshops currently offered?

In-person workshops are offered in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland.

Online workshops are available throughout Canada. 

What kind of workshops does the training program offer?

The Mitacs Training program is focused on four core competency areas in Professional Development. These are Leadership and Management, Communications and Relationship Building, Personal and Professional Management and Entrepreneurialism. The individual workshops in the training curriculum build skills in each of these competencies. For more information on our specific workshops please click here.

Do your workshops favour some disciplines over others?

No. Our workshops offer an interdisciplinary approach to professional skills development. Participants will benefit from industry expertise and teaching methods that will give them the skills to succeed while augmenting their academic learning.

Who is eligible to participate in Mitacs Training workshops?

Workshops are open to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows currently registered at a Canadian university or participating in any Mitacs program (Accelerate, Elevate, and Globalink). Workshops are also open to past graduate students who have graduated from a Canadian academic institution in the past 2 years . 

I was not born in Canada but attend a Canadian institution. Am I eligible to attend Mitacs Training workshops?

Yes. As an international graduate student or postdoctoral fellow, you are eligible to attend in-person workshops. You are also eligible to attend our online workshops.

I am no longer a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow. Can I still attend workshops?

Yes, you can still attend! Workshops are also open to past graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who have graduated from a Canadian institution in the past two years.

Where can I find a list of upcoming Mitacs Training workshops at my university or in my region?

A list of workshops can be found by clicking the “Register” tab. You can either search for workshops using our calendar or workshop catalogue. Please note that online workshops can be found under the ALL tab and is not categorized by province or institution.

How do I register for a workshop?

Before registering for a workshop you will need to log on to the training registration portal. If you do not have an account you will need to create one. Once you have created an account/logged in, you can search and register for workshops by clicking the Register tab and viewing scheduled workshops on our calendar or catalogue. 

Why do I require a credit card to register if Mitacs Training workshops are free of charge?

Mitacs Training workshops are free for all participants; however, due to high demand, the preauthorization of a valid credit card is required as part of the registration process in order to guarantee your attendance. We can only accept Visa and MasterCard credit cards. 

What is a credit card pre-authorization?

A pre-authorization is a temporary hold of a specific amount of the available balance on a credit / debit card. The pre-authorization is NOT a charge and you are not responsible for paying for it.

When is the credit card pre-authorized?

All credit cards are pre-authorized when a participant registers for a workshop.

When does the pre-authorization get removed from the credit card?

This depends on your individual credit card. It can take anywhere from 24 hours to up to 3 weeks for the pre-authorization to be removed by your credit card company.

Why won’t your registration system accept my credit card?

The Mitacs Training registration portal only accepts Visa and MasterCard credit cards issued by Canadian or American banking institutions. 

Can I register with a Visa Debit card?

No. You can only register with a valid credit card. 

Will my credit card ever be charged?

Your credit card will be charged a $50.00 “No Show” fee if you register and do not attend the workshop or if you do not cancel before the finalized registration period of 5 calendar days prior to the start date of the workshop.  If you cancel your registration 5 or more days in advance of the workshop, you will not be charged. Additionally, participants that present themselves but do not attend the workshop in full will also be charged a $50.00 “Incomplete” fee. 

How can I register if I do not have a credit card?

The workshop I am trying to register for is password protected? Can I still register?

Password protected workshops are offered in support of our Mitacs programs or exclusively to one of our external partners. If you are affiliated with a Mitacs program and have not received the password, please contact your Program Specialist. 

NOTE: Passwords may be removed at a later date so check back closer to the start of the workshop.

Workshops reserved for external partners will not have their passwords removed. 

How do I know if I am registered or on the waiting list for a workshop?

Following your registration you will receive an email that will notify you if you have a confirmed seat or been placed on the waiting list. You may also view your current status by clicking on My Profile followed by the “Workshops” tab.

I am on the waitlist for a workshop. How and when will I be notified if/when I have been added to the workshop?

If someone cancels, you will be moved to a “Registered” status for the workshop in sequential order from the waitlist and notified via email of your new status. You may also view your current status by clicking on My Profile followed by the Workshops tab. 

How do I cancel my workshop registration(s)?

You can manually cancel your workshop registration(s) up until five calendar days before the workshop. To cancel a workshop registration click My Profile followed by the “Workshops” tab. Then click “Cancel Registration” next to the order number you wish to cancel.

Please note that cancellations will not be possible within the 5 calendar day period before the workshop and you will need to contact the training team if you wish to cancel your workshop registration.

I am unable to cancel my registration(s), what can I do?

Can I show up late to Mitacs Training in-person workshop?

No. Late participants will not be admitted into the workshop. Late participants may also lose their seats to participants that are on the waiting list. 

Can I attend part of a Mitacs Training workshop?

No. Participants are required to complete both online and in-person workshops in their entirety. Those who choose to not participate for the entire duration of the workshop will be charged a $50.00 “Incomplete” fee.

Can I participate in a Level II Mitacs Training workshop if I have not participated in the Level I workshop?

No. If you have not participated in the mandatory Level I pre-requisite, you cannot participate in a Level II workshop.

How do I receive acknowledgement of participation in a workshop?

You will receive a confirmation email once the workshop is complete that serves as the official record of your participation. Mitacs Training does not issue certificates following the completion of a workshop.
