Project Description:

UV-C Optical Simulation:

  • This project will seek to research how different reflective materials and enclosed chamber designs can be utilized to maximize the intensity of UV-C light on portable objects like Cell Phones or Pulse Oximeters.

UV-C Microbiogial testing:

  • This project will examine how different heat sources and UV-C light can be combined to kill common bacteria such as e. coli or Staphylococcus aureus.

UV-C Materials Testing:

  • This project will explore the effects of alcohol solutions as well as prolonged exposure to UV-C light on soft and hard plactic materials. 

Research Objectives:

  • Determine highest UV Spot dosage by manipulating reflectivity within an enclosed space
  • Determine ideal temperature/uv dosage for reduction of specific pathegons
  • Materials testing to failure and potential mitigating factors using UV-C or bleach


UV-C Optical Simulation: Three dimensional irritational simulation of UVC representing bulbs/LED inside aluminum reflective chamber:

  • Evaluating different parabolic designs to achieve the highest UV dosage exposure
  • Looking at different reflective materials to determine the highest reflectivity

UV-C Microbiogial testing: UVC dosages vs temperature vs Kill rate for selected microorganisms:

  • Requires microbiology testing capabilities
  • Pathogen(s) exposed to UVC for incremental duration and measure kill rate
  • Pathogen(s) exposed to constant UVC with increased ambient temperature and measure kill rate

UV-C Materials Testing: Material degradation testing for prolonged UVC exposure:

  • Compare material degradation using chemical cleaning wipes and prolonged UVC exposure
  • Visual inspection for discoloration, shape changes, cracking, corrosion, surface abrasions

Expertise and Skills Needed:

    UV-C Optical Simulation:

    • Experience with Tracepro or similar optical modeling software
    • Experience working with UV Reflective materials such Silicon Oxide or Teflon

    UV-C Microbiogial testing:

    • Experience with Culture Media Microbobiology
    • Experience with Ultra Sonic Water Bath Testing

    UV-C Materials Testing:

    • Experience measuring mechanical performance stress/strain, impact/hardness, surface/abrasion, discoloration, etc
